Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 20% of 500 is 0.20 × 500 = 100. Use the first tab (X% of Y) to do this instantly.

How do I calculate a percentage increase or decrease?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. Going from 100 to 150 is a 50% increase. Going from 200 to 150 is a 25% decrease.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 25 out of 200 is 25 ÷ 200 × 100 = 12.5%. Use the "X is % of Y" tab.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change compares a new value to an original value, so the order matters. Percentage difference compares two values without calling either one the original, and it divides by their average. Use change for things like price rises and difference for comparing two similar measurements.

How do I calculate a discount?

Find the discount amount by taking the discount percentage of the price, then subtract it. A 25% discount on an $80 item is $20 off, so you pay $60.

Can a percentage be more than 100%?

Yes. A percentage over 100% means the amount is bigger than the reference value. For example, going from 50 to 150 is a 200% increase.
