Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the savings. Subtract the savings from the original price to get the sale price. A 20% discount on $100 saves $20 and the sale price is $80.

How do I find the original price if I only know the sale price?

Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount as a decimal. If an item costs $60 after 25% off, the original price was 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

What happens when two discounts are stacked?

They multiply, they do not add. A 20% discount followed by another 10% discount is not 30% off. It is 1 − (0.8 × 0.9) = 28% off in total.

Is sales tax added before or after the discount?

In many places sales tax is charged on the discounted price, but rules and store policies vary. Check your receipt or local rules to be sure.

How do I work out the percentage off from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. For example, $80 down to $60 is (80 − 60) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% off. The Percentage Calculator can do this for you.

What is the table of all discounts?

After you enter a price, the calculator compares the sale price and savings at common discount levels from 10% to 80%. It helps you judge how good a deal really is.
