Count words, characters, sentences & more โ instantly as you type
This free word counter counts the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in your text as you type. It also shows unique words, average word length, reading time, speaking time and your most-used keywords.
Use it for essays, articles, blog posts, emails, speeches, social posts and any writing that has a word limit.
Example: a 1,200-word article takes about 5 minutes to read and about 8 minutes to speak. If your main keyword appears 12 times in 800 words, its density is 1.5%.
It counts groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. A hyphenated word such as well-known counts as one word, and so does a contraction such as don't.
Sentences are counted by splitting the text at periods, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations like Dr. or numbers like 3.5 can add extra sentences. Each block of text separated by a line break counts as one paragraph.
The tool assumes about 240 words per minute for silent reading and about 150 words per minute for speaking. For example, a 1,200-word article takes about 5 minutes to read and 8 minutes to read aloud.
It shows the 10 words you use most, ignoring very common words such as the, and, of and words shorter than 3 letters. Use it to spot repeated words or check that your main topic word appears naturally.
Keyword density is how often a word appears compared with the total words. Divide the keyword count by your word count and multiply by 100. For example, 12 uses in 800 words is 1.5%. There is no magic percentage, so write naturally for readers first.
No. Everything runs in your browser and your text is not stored or sent anywhere. Note that unique words and keywords are designed for English text.
Note: Reading and speaking times are averages. Real speed depends on the reader and the topic.
