How GPA Is Calculated

GPA is a weighted average of your grade points, where credit hours are the weights:

GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Example: Mathematics (3 credits, A = 4.0) gives 12.0 points. English (3 credits, B+ = 3.3) gives 9.9 points. Science (4 credits, A- = 3.7) gives 14.8 points. Total points are 36.7 and total credits are 10, so GPA = 36.7 ÷ 10 = 3.67.

The calculator uses this common 4.0 scale: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each letter grade is converted to grade points (for example A = 4.0, B = 3.0). Multiply the grade points by the course credits, add these results for all courses, then divide by the total credits. Courses with more credits have a bigger effect on your GPA.

What is a good GPA?

On a 4.0 scale, 3.0 is roughly a B average and is often the minimum for many programs and scholarships. A GPA of 3.5 or higher is generally considered strong, and very competitive programs often expect higher. Requirements differ by school, so check with yours.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for every course. A weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP or IB classes. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Add all your courses from every semester into the calculator, with the credits and grade for each one. The result is your cumulative GPA across all those courses.

Do plus and minus grades change my GPA?

Yes. On the common 4.0 scale, an A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3 and a B- is 2.7. Many schools use this system, but some do not give A+ extra points or do not use plus and minus grades at all.

How can I raise my GPA?

Higher grades in courses with more credits help the most. Use the calculator to test what grade you need in your remaining courses to reach a target GPA, and talk to your advisor about retake policies.
